Hi Iain,

I have read this so many times that I can almost recite this. It has replayed in my mind on a daily basis and has been a source of comfort, meditation and hope as I continue to struggle with my own mental illness. This writing ranks up there as one of the worlds most profound and beautifully crafted examples of inspiration, art, humanity and spirituality that exits in written form. It inspires, heals, reassures......

Releasing of shame...... this replays in my head over and over again. As a Social Worker, I have worked with many people with mental illness and have always felt the pain and identified with others as they talk about the shame... shame of being weak, shame of not trying hard enough, shame of speaking and acting while having an acute period of illness and wishing they/I can rewind and take it back. I can't remember the exact quotes but Maya Angelou and Don Miguel Ruiz(sp?) have inferred that a person cannot feel shame when at any moment we are a culmination of the experiences that we have and are experiencing - constant noise - hard to think straight. No one has perfect insight, some days are clearer than others. Iain, anyone who KNOWS you, knows that you have no reason for shame, not now, not in the past and not ever. Easily said but harder to remember during those dark moments. Myself included.

Iain, thank you for taking the risk, thank you for fighting against the stigma of mental illness, and thank you for being you.

Hey Iain - thanks for sharing this. We went to St. Mary's together - you were a couple of years ahead of me. And now we share something else - depression. Mine hit hard a couple of years ago, although looking back, I think it started earlier. I saw a couple of doctors, and was finally put on an anti-depressant, and like you, that "cloud" lifted a few weeks later. It's been a rough road, however, and I'm still trying to recover back to what I know is "normal" for me. Keep the faith, my friend, we'll get through this!

I was utterly blessed to read this amazing post. It testifies to your personal journey and if we all became a little more vulnerable and understanding sharing our stories, life experiences(free of fear and judgement), and our rise and falls in a genuine heartfelt effort I am convinced that this would bring greater healing. I know of a few of our clients that would greatly benefit from this post Iain. I thank you for your courage and always your inspiration my friend!

I have volunteered for the last twenty years in the area surrounding mental health and am always trying to find ways of helping those who live with mental illness. This was a way for me to privately spend time helping myself as I too live with a mental illness and have never had the courage to share this with most people. I struggle to trust as I see and have experienced how judgements from others have had such a negative impact leaving me to challenge who I am and what place I have on this earth. With help during the last few years I have started traveling a new and exciting path. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Iain
Thank you for sharing this blog with us. I have never taken to depression lightly and always strive to show support to friends who are feeling down. You're right, people don't immediately admit they are depressed but it doesn't mean you can't be there for them. It became a much more important issue for me when one of friends told me his friend committed suicide because he was depressed, and I had another friend who tried to commit suicide. You don't know how to help but talking about it is always a good start.
I have dedicated my life now to help people. To reach out to people and to help change their lives.
Your blog is inspiring and I will share it with those I know who may need that extra help.
Thank you
